25 Jun (Reuters) – The International Monetary Fund is confident that Argentina will continue paying what it owes the IMF, even though a report from its own team describes its ability to pay as subject to exceptional risks.
“Argentina has made all its payments to the Fund, and we are confident that it will continue to do so. We have no concerns in this regard,” said Julie Kozack, director of the IMF’s communications department.
She highlighted the “important role” of international financial institutions and other multilateral development banks in supporting a country’s financing strategies.

Last month, however, the IMF technical team flagged “exceptional risks” to Argentina’s payment capacity.
“Argentina’s ability to honor its obligations to the Fund remains subject to exceptional risks and depends on its ability to strengthen reserve coverage and regain market access in a timely and sustainable manner,” IMF staff wrote in May.
“Argentina’s low level of liquid reserves continues to pose risks to its repayment capacity, especially considering its very high short-term debt obligations and potential volatility ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.”
Argentina faces debt payments of almost US$23 billion, including to the IMF, in 2027.
