Lula makes Teresa Leitão official in leading the government in the Senate

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) formalized this Thursday (25) Teresa Leitão (PT-PE) as the new leader of the government in the Senate. In a publication in the Official Gazette of the Union, Planalto confirmed the decision that had already been announced during the day.

She replaces the senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), who stepped down from his position after being the target, last week, of a PF (Federal Police) operation related to the Banco Master case. A conversation between Lula and the senator this morning confirmed the choice.

In announcing the new leadership, Lula highlighted that Teresa’s “mission” also includes articulating the advancement of the so-called Public Security PEC, held in the Senate since March, in addition to the PEC that foresees the end of the 6×1 work schedule. These two proposals are the Executive’s highest priorities and await action from the President of the House, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP).

“I will work to strengthen the coordination between Palácio do Planalto, the allied base and parliamentarians, especially the leaders and the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, contributing to the construction of consensus and to the advancement of agendas of interest to the government and the Brazilian people, such as the end of the 6×1 scale, the Public Security PEC and other measures aimed at the country’s development, social justice and improving the population’s quality of life”, said Teresa in a post on social media.

Teresa had until then occupied the leadership of the PT in the Senate. The senator is seen as a congresswoman with good relations with the opposition and government supporters. She is also halfway through her eight-year term in the Senate and will not be a candidate in this year’s elections, which guarantees more time to dedicate to her leadership role in the House.
