A week to go until the referendum: the Home Office has published key guidance for voters

A referendum will be held in Slovakia in a week, in which the Slovaks will decide on two questions. Polling stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. A voting card for elections outside of permanent residence can only be applied for in person by Friday, July 3. Subsequently, on Saturday, July 4, the voter can vote in the referendum in any polling station in Slovakia with a card. This follows from information published on the website of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic.

Voters will be in the referendum to decide on two questions – whether they agree with the cancellation of the so-called life annuity, for example for Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), and whether they agree to the restoration of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the National Criminal Agency. The President of the Slovak Republic announces a referendum if at least 350,000 citizens request it through a petition. The petition for the referendum was initiated by the non-parliamentary party Democrats.

The voting card gives the right to be registered in the voter list in any electoral district. A voter can apply for a card in person during office hours of the municipality in which he has permanent residence. The municipality issues the voting card without delay.

The right to vote in the referendum belongs to a citizen of the Slovak Republic who has the right to vote in the National Council of the Slovak Republic, i.e. he has turned at least 18 years old on the day of the referendum. You can also vote in the referendum from abroad, you had to request it in advance. 8,460 voters registered to vote by mail from abroad, the most, 3,540, from the Czech Republic.
