In a speech in St. Peter’s Square this Sunday (28), Pope Leo XIV expressed his closeness to the Venezuelan people, hit by two devastating earthquakes at the beginning of the week.
He offered prayers for the countless victims and their families, as well as those injured and all involved in the search and rescue efforts.
The death toll, in what is considered the deadliest earthquake in Venezuela’s modern history, surpassed 1,400 on Saturday (27), with the arrival of foreign rescue teams in the country.
Leo also thanked the pilgrims and Romans who braved the heatwave that has swept Europe in recent weeks to gather in St. Peter’s Square, which was sparsely attended.
