It shades the fence and grows up to two meters. At the beginning of July, a giant perennial with the smell of bananas blooms

Are you looking for an impressive plant for the fence that does not require demanding care? The true Oman grows up to two meters, creates a natural screen and will surprise you with an exotic aroma reminiscent of bananas. In addition, its roots are used in traditional cough medicine. Do you have it in your garden too?

When planning flower beds, we usually try to choose plants that play with bright colors, but we often overlook those that can give the space a monumental dimension. If we are looking for a majestic companion for the fence or an empty corner of the plot where ordinary small flowers do not thrive, we should turn our attention to one unjustly neglected herb.

Oman as a perfect plant

Which plant are you talking about? It is a true oman, which is an impressive perennial that easily reaches a height of up to two meters and reliably creates a dense, deep green wall with its huge leaves. In the hot days of early July, it blooms with a flood of bright yellow flowers that spread an unexpected exotic aroma reminiscent of ripe bananas.

How to grow Oman?

Growing this garden giant is not difficult at all, which will please anyone who does not want to spend long hours in demanding care. Oman is an extremely hardy plant that thrives best in full sun or partial shade, while also being able to cope with harsher weather conditions. If we talk about , it suits deep, well-drained and nutrient-rich soil that can retain adequate moisture. At the same time, we do not have to worry that it would die in our heavier soil if we give it a little compost to improve the structure when planting. However, due to its lush growth and massive root system, it needs enough space, so we prefer not to plant it in close proximity to small rocks, which it could easily crush.

Self-sufficient garden fig

Once this perennial plants its roots, it becomes essentially self-sufficient in the flower bed. During the dry summer months, they will appreciate the occasional onebut thanks to its deep root, it can survive even short-term dry periods without serious damage. A big advantage of oman is also its frost resistance, so with the arrival of winter we don’t have to deal with the complicated covering with aspen, which we would hardly succeed at anyway given the size of this plant (if we postpone a thorough cut until spring).

Simple care

In autumn or early spring, only the entire aerial part cut just above the ground and with the first spring sun, we will watch with amazement how huge leaves sprout from the ground again in a flash, which will create a perfect natural screen in a few weeks.

It’s not just the views of the neighbors

In addition to the aesthetic benefit and banana scent, this plant also has very deep roots in traditional healing. The object of collection is mainly the massive, aromatic rhizome, which is best dug up in the fall of the second or third year and then dried for the preparation of medicinal teas or syrups. This is because it contains a high amount of inulin and essential oils, which are excellent for persistent coughs, facilitate expectoration and support the proper functioning of the entire digestive tract. When we plant the true oman along the fence, we not only get a wonderful summer decoration and reliable protection from the curious eyes of the neighbors, but also a valuable contribution to the home pharmacy, which we will always have close at hand.
