Brazil will help Venezuela “in the short and medium term”, says Múcio

Minister says Brazilian support will include emergency and reconstruction after earthquakes that left more than 1,900 dead

The Minister of Defense, José Múcio, stated this Tuesday (June 30, 2026) that Brazil is willing to help Venezuela “in the short and medium term”. The statement was made to journalists during Múcio’s visit to the country, which was last week.

The tremors, of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, hit Caracas and La Guaira on June 24. At least, and tens of thousands remain missing. United Nations agencies warn of food shortages and the risk of disease in the region.

Mucio landed at Maiquetía airport, in La Guaira, the epicenter of the tragedy, and met with the Venezuelan Defense Minister, Gustavo González López. “We have 2 moments with this event. The 1st is the emergency and the 2nd is reconstruction”said the Brazilian minister.

“We will return to Brasília, pass on the elements of what we saw here, both to the city’s minister and the President of the Republic, and, from that, obviously, we will have guidelines and directions for what we can effectively do”declared Mucio.

Mucio and González López together inspected a Navy field hospital set up in La Guaira.

“We, the Brazilian people, especially my president, are very friends with Venezuela”said Mucio.

The President’s government (PT) mobilized Air Force planes to transport humanitarian aid, including rescue teams and medical supplies. Around 100 Brazilian soldiers are working in the disaster zone, according to the Ministry of Defense.

EARTHQUAKE IN VENEZUELA

The earthquakes occurred west of Caracas and collapsed buildings in the Venezuelan capital.

The epicenter of the 1st earthquake was located 24 km east-northeast of San Felipe, at a depth of 21.8 km. The second earthquake had its epicenter 23 km southeast of Yumare, at a depth of 10 km. The 2 events were classified by the USGS (United States Geological Survey) as red alert, the highest level of risk in the agency’s system.
