The MRE (Foreign Ministry) of Brazil informed UOL that it “closely follows” the situation of Brazilians in Portugal, after the local government announces that it will notify 4,574 foreigners in an irregular situation to leave the country.
What happened
Embassy of Brazil in Portugal is “in direct contact with local authorities,” says Itamaraty. According to the agency, the intention is to understand the reach of the measure.
Minister of Presidency of Portugal provided information at a news conference yesterday. According to António Leitão Amaro, 18,000 people should receive such warnings soon.
Foreigners will have 20 days to leave, from the sending of the notification. If this does not happen, the Portuguese government may expel them from the country.
Brazilians in the target
Situation should especially impact Brazilians. In recent years, a migratory wave has led a large number of Brazilians to try their lives in the European country.
Only in 2024, 1470 Brazilians had the entrance denied in Portugal. The number is 721% higher compared to 2023, when 179 refusal were recorded. The information is from the annual internal security report, released by the Portuguese Government.
Brazil leads the ranking of Portuguese refusal. Following are Angola with 274 negatives and the United Kingdom with 108. Countries like the US (63) and Venezuela (58) are also among the 10 most refusal nationalities.
