The leader of the greatest Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Özgür Özel on Sunday in Istanbul was physically attacked by a man in the past convicted of murder. After Özel, he was hit by the suspect and took the suspicion and took in custody, TASR writes, according to a DPA referring to Monday’s Turkish media reports.
The incident occurred during the funeral ceremony for the deceased politician from the Prokurdian Party of Equality of Nations and Democracy (DEM). In the video record from the place you can see a man, as in the center of Istanbul Square, Taksim strikes his hand in the face. Shortly afterwards, the CHP leader declared that he was okay.
According to the Turkish Interior Ministry, Özel, a 66-year-old man, who allegedly killed two of his children in 2004 and was sentenced to life. In 2020, however, he was conditionally released.
The case is currently being investigated by the competent authorities. The Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet reported that the offender did not plan the attack. According to the DHA news agency, he felt anger against CHP for a long time for refusing to be entitled to meal vouchers – on the grounds that it was not a member of it.
The attack by Özela was condemned by leaders across Turkey across the entire political spectrum. As DPA recalls, the former Istanbul Mayor of Ekremoglu, who was arrested in March and subsequently deprived of office, is also a member of CHP. CHP regularly calls for meetings for his release from prison.
