Data from the Judicial Police indicate that 65% of victims of rape crimes in 2022, 2023 and the first three quarters of 2024 are women.
Between January and September this year, 344 women were raped in Portugal, an official source from the Judiciary Police (PJ) told the Lusa agency this Monday.
In 2022, the PJ registered 421 women raped out of a universe of 630 rapes and in 2023 there were 359 cases of women raped out of a universe of 551.
Between January and September this year, 521 rapes were recorded, 344 of which were women.
Regarding the number of women victims of homicide in the context of domestic violence, there are records of 56 femicides between January 1, 2022 and September 30, 2024.
According to the most recent data from 15 women were killed in the first three quarters of 2024 in a universe of 18 homicides in the context of domestic violence.
In 2022, 24 femicides were recorded out of a total of 28 homicides in the context of domestic violence. In 2023, 17 femicides were recorded in a total of 22 homicides.
Data from the Observatory of Murdered Women (OMA) demonstrate, in turn, that in the majority of femicides, particularly in the context of intimate relationships, “there was prior domestic violence”.
According to OMA data revealed last week, between January 1 and November 15, 2024, there were 20 victims of completed femicide and “30 attempted femicides” in the same period of time in 2024.
“Analyzing the data on femicides and attempted femicides together, 50 women suffered an attack on their lives in 2024. Almost five per month. It is essential to prevent femicides, providing more appropriate and especially faster responses to situations of domestic violence”, warned Cátia Pontedeira, from OMA.
According to Cátia Pontedeira, before femicide, victims suffer various other forms of prior violence, which often include death threats. These death threats should not be underestimated,” he warned.
