Suriname coach Stanley Menzo and one of the team’s players reported on Monday (8) racist insults during the match that the national team played in El Salvador in the final phase of Concacaf qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
According to Menzo and defender Shaquille Pinas, fans who went to Cuscatlán stadium in San Salvador, they called the Players of the Suriname “black” and “monkeys” players when they went to the fans of their country at the end of the match.
“You have to ask why your fans shout at my ‘black’ players. Why do they do that?” Asked Menzo at a news conference against a journalist’s question about whether the Suriname players had faced the local crowd.
“I think we were calm the first time we came here in June, now we are, too, but as the coach said, if you say ‘black’ and ‘monkey’, that kind of thing … It doesn’t look funny to me,” added Pinas, naturalized Dutchman Surinam.
Suriname surprised by defeating El Salvador 2-1 as a visitor in the second round of the final phase of Concacaf qualifiers for the World Cup. Despite being a South American country, Suriname disputes the tournament with teams from North and Central America.
The goals of the match were scored by Radinio Balker and Dhoraso Klas, to visitors, while Anfernee Dijksteel (against) scored the local goal.
With the result, Suriname approaches the unprecedented classification for a World Cup. He leads group A with four points, one more than El Salvador. Panama has two points and Guatemala has one.
The leader of each group gets a direct place to the World Cup, while the second place goes to the world recap.
