Two land tremors were recorded in the region of the city of Contagemin Greater Belo Horizonte (MG), between the night of this Tuesday (16) and the dawn of this Wednesday (17). The records were made by the Brazilian seismographic network and analyzed by the USP Seismology Center (University of São Paulo).
According to the agency, The first tremor happened at 10:12 pm on Tuesday, of magnitude 2.9 mrand the second at 2:25 am on Wednesday, about four hours after the first event, of 2.5 mr magnitude. MR is the Richter scale unit of measurement to establish the intensity of tremors.
According to the Civil Defense of Contagem, the cause of tremors has not yet been identified and the shake represents a seismological risk. The agency reported that, so far, no occurrence in the deployment of tremors has been recorded and that the situation remains monitored.

The seismographic network also reported that residents of Belo HorizonteRibeirão das Neves, Betim, Ibirité, Emeralds and other municipalities in the region reported that they felt the shake.
“Small tremors in MG are not uncommon, on the contrary. It is the state with the largest number of records registered. Natural tremors, for the most part, are due to the great geological pressures that work in the earth’s crust, ”explains Bruno Collaço, a USP and RSBR seismologist.
The Civil Defense of Minas Gerais reported that it should receive technical reports from the Seismological Observatory of the University of Brasilia (UnB) and the USP seismology center on Wednesday (17). “These documents will indicate if the tremors were caused by natural phenomena or by some explosion“, says the agency.
RSBR is coordinated by the National Observatory (ON/MCTI) with the support of the Geological Service of Brazil (SGB/CPRM).
