The growth of livestock production in Brazil in 2024, released by the rekindled the debate in Washington about the impact of the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Brazilian products. A bill was presented in the US Senate to overthrow up to 50% tariff on imports, a measure considered harmful to bilateral trade.

According to American parliamentarians who advocate the proposal, Brazil is a strategic partner, especially exports of meat, poultry, eggs and coffee, products that supply the US market. In 2024 alone, the country recorded records such as 1.6 billion commercial birds and 5.4 billion dozen eggs, consolidating itself as one of the world’s largest suppliers.

The senators’ concern is that higher rates face the American supply chain and bring Brazil closer to China, the main destination for Brazilian beef exports – which grew almost 27% last year. “Trump’s rates are a common American pocket tax,” said the project advocates.

The proposal, supported by Democrats and Republicans, seeks to revoke the National Emergency Declaration that supported the tariff increases. For senators, trade policy must be defined by Congress and not used as an instrument of political pressure by the White House.

Brazil, which also broke a record in milk production (35.7 billion liters) and saw the swine herd reach 43.9 million heads, appears as a central piece in the food market. Therefore, critics warn that maintaining tariff can harm consumers and companies in the US, while limiting access to essential inputs.
