The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, said on Tuesday, 23, that the resolution of two states must be debated for the conflict in Gaza, highlighting the urgency of political measures to avoid humanitarian collapse in the region.
According to him, “in Gaza, hunger plagues the population and bombings have intensified,” which requires a permanent ceasefire and a renewed international commitment to peace.
The statement was made during the opening of the UN General Assembly of 2025. Guterres stressed that the institution “is more than a meeting place, it is a moral compass, a catalyst for sustainable development.”

He warned that hunger is being “made of weapon” and that the truth is being silenced, without mentioning a specific place, questioning, “Do we want to live in a world of power? Or in a world where all nations want to live together?”
The secretary general defended some “critical” choices, beginning with the principle that “peace must be international law, but today the war dominates with barbarity.” He also stated that impunity is the “mother of chaos, and caused numerous conflicts over time.”
