Raising money is routine, but there is a detail that many ignore in the ATM and can make all the difference: a gesture of seconds can lock fraud that clanity cards and capture the PIN without the holder noticing.
What has changed (and why it must be aware)
In recent months, European police forces, including the Civil Guardia in Spain, have returned to attention to discreet schemes that take advantage of technological evolution, according to the Spanish portal El Periódico. The scenario is simple: apparently normal terminals, in places of great passage, where a false accessory fitted into the card slot and a overlapping microchammation or keyboard captures simultaneously the card data and the secret code.
In Portugal, the recommendations follow the same line of prudence: Choose machines in illuminated or watched places, observe the terminal before using it and protect the keyboard by hand while introducing the PIN. They are basic habits, but they remain the best “safe” against this type of scam.
The sign that should never ignore
There is a point that the authorities underline with insistence: if the operation is given as completed, but the money does not leave, do not abandon the box. In some variants of the coup, the cash is trapped by an accessory placed in the dismissal slit. If the customer walks away, the criminal removes the piece and collects the notes. Staying at the scene, immediately contacting the bank through the official number and asking for police support are essential steps to safeguard your money.
Similarly, any indication of “loose pieces”, misaligned frames, different color grooves or little firm keyboards should lead to cancel the operation and look for another terminal. It is not dramatizing; It is preventing.
Fraud is not just at ATM
Beside these physical schemes, they continue to circulate attempts by message and phone. First arrive the false links (phishing) with pages that mimic the bank; Then the calls where someone goes by an employee and “asks” codes urgently.
The rule is simple and applies to all institutions: do not introduce credentials on open pages by link, do not validate operations you did not ask for and do not share codes with third parties, by SMS, email or call.
What to do if it is suspected
If you notice something out of the normal during the operation, or if you later come movements you do not recognize, immediately contact your bank to block the card and record participation with the authorities (PSP/GNR or Judicial Police, as appropriate). Store the time, the place and, if possible, the terminal identifier. The sooner it acts, the more likely to limit damage.
Prevention that results
The good news is that small habits substantially reduce the risk: protecting the pin by hand, prefer terminals inside agencies or watched spaces, distrusting machines with “strange” pieces and keeping active transactions alerts in the bank’s app. It is not advanced technology, it is practical attention, every day.
According to, security starts with the user. Institutions reinforce equipment and monitor operations, but it is the gesture of covering the PIN, the decision to change machines or the choice of not clicking a suspicious link that closes the door to the blow. And that literally takes only a few seconds.
