Peru’s Congress approved on Thursday night (9) the dismissal of President Dina Boluarte for “permanent moral incapacity”. The head of the Executive lost the support of parties that supported her in the midst of a crisis worsened by the increase in crime in the country.
Boluarte, 63 years old, took office in December 2022, after the dismissal of then-president Pedro Castillo, whose deputy he was. Castillo was removed from power on the same day he attempted to dissolve Congress and remains in preventive detention. With Boluarte’s departure, the presidency should be assumed by José Jerí, president of Congress.
Throughout the day, the Popular Force, Alliance for Progress and Popular Renewal parties announced support for the requests for the president’s removal. In the evening, four motions for the overthrow of Boluarte were approved. Before the vote in Congress, Boluarte said he intended to complete his term, which runs until July 2026. General elections are scheduled for April.
