Giant traffic jam marked the end of the Golden Week holiday and paralyzed traffic for hours
The end of Golden Week, one of China’s most important holidays, ended with an impressive scene on the country’s roads.
Thousands of drivers faced a huge traffic jam, considered the biggest in a decade, which left more than 120,000 vehicles at a standstill for hours.
The images, recorded on October 7th, at the Wuzhuang tollgate, in Chuzhou, show a veritable chain of red lights stretching for kilometers, with practically motionless cars trying to return home after the long weekend.
According to local media, the intense flow of vehicles caused traffic to move at a slow pace for much of the night.
Golden Week is a busy period in the country, when millions of Chinese take advantage of their days off to travel and visit family.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Tourism, 888 million domestic trips were recorded this year, a record number since the end of pandemic restrictions.
The result was an unprecedented overload on the main highways, with long queues and exhausted drivers trying to reach their destination.
