Lenine Cunha, in the triple jump, Sandro Baessa, in the 1,500 meters, and Igor Oliveira, in the 100 meters, became Virtus world champions this Sunday in Brisbane, a competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Portugal closed the second day of competition with a team in the T20 category (track athletes) and won three golds and two silvers.
Lenine Cunha won a double medal, becoming world champion in the triple jump with a mark of 12.97 meters, and winning the silver medal in the heptathlon, a race in which he finished in second place, with 3,229 points.
In the 1,500 meter final, Sandro Baessa secured gold with a time of 03.59.52 minutes, at a distance in which Cristiano Pereira was eighth, with 04.18.54.
Igor Oliveira, who was the big favorite in the 100 meters, confirmed his status, with 10.92 seconds, ahead of Australian Sammy Muamba (10.94) and Japanese Kuma Watanabe (10.95).
The second silver for Portugal, in addition to Lenine’s, was won by Carina Paim, who ran the 400 meters in 58.86 seconds, behind India’s Deepthi Jeevanji (55.92).
On Saturday, the Portuguese delegation had already climbed to the podium, with Ana Filipe winning the world title in the triple jump.
This is taking place in Brisbane, at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Center (QSAC), facilities that will be the training track for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
