On All Saints' Day, remember this. You will ensure happiness for the whole family

In the past, during the current All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day, Dziady was celebrated – it was believed that on the night from October 31 to November 1, one could contact the deceased. Therefore, on that night and the next, many rituals were performed related to people who had passed away. One such superstition was intended to bring happiness to the family, both those living and those whose time on earth was over.

Like many other holidays, November 1 has its own superstitions. We will find both positive and negative ones. Let’s focus on the one that can bring us prosperity. One of these rituals is very well known and not so long ago it was common in villages. According to it at night a meal had to be put out for the dead — various dishes were prepared, sometimes the favorite delicacies of the deceased.

Dishes were placed on windowsills or in front of the door of the house. This was to encourage the deceased to visit and eat before continuing their journey – it was believed that at this time the line between worlds was blurred and souls could roam freely on earth — empty plates and bowls were supposed to indicate that the household had been visited. It was also supposed to herald prosperity for the family and prove that the deceased had found his way back. Of course, the food was usually eaten by wild animals, but it is an interesting ritual that is worth performing in a slightly different form.
