Ethiopia was chosen this Tuesday (11) as the host country for the 32nd United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP32), which will be held in 2027, according to the group of African countries. The decision was announced as part of the climate summit being held in , where a consensus has not yet been reached on the country that will host next year’s meeting, COP31, held between Australia and Turkey.

Ethiopia, which was competing for the seat with Nigeria, received the unanimous support of the group of African countries, which in regional turn should designate the next host. The decision must still be formally adopted by all member countries before the end of COP30, scheduled for November 21st.

The environmental organization 350.org praised the decision and highlighted that the designation is an opportunity to “visilize” Africa’s climate priorities and leadership. However, the NGO’s representative on the African continent, Rukiya Khamis, called for a decision to be quickly reached on the hosting of the climate summit in 2026.

“The world cannot afford to use climate diplomacy as a political bargaining chip. We urge all parties to resolve the COP31 impasse to prevent momentum from being undermined at a crucial time for climate action,” said the activist.

Climate conferences are organized on a rotating basis between five regional blocs.

This year, the host will represent Latin America and the Caribbean and, for 2026, it is expected that the designation will be for a country from the Western European bloc and other states.

Australia wants to organize it in Adelaide, together with the Pacific countries, but Turkey maintains its candidacy for Antalya, which has generated an impasse within the regional group.

If an agreement is not reached in Belém by November 21, the next climate summit will be held by default in the German city of Bonn, home of the UN Climate Secretariat.
