Mercadona opened a new store in Portugal, expanding the presence of the Spanish chain and creating 90 new jobs. The opening marks a new step in the company’s expansion strategy and confirms the accelerated pace of growth it has maintained in the national market, where it is preparing to reach 70 stores by 2026.
The store is located in Alta de Lisboa, in Lumiar, and opened with 90 new jobs, all with open-ended contracts from the first day, according to the company itself. This is the ninth store in the district and marks an expansion that will continue in 2026 with a second opening planned for Quinta do Lambert.
A bigger store with more services
According to information provided by Mercadona, the Alta de Lisboa supermarket has around 1900 square meters of sales area. Inside, the chain’s usual sections remain: butcher’s, fishmonger’s, delicatessen, pastry shop, bakery, perfumery, home and pet care, fruit and vegetables, wine cellar and the ready-to-eat area with self-service. This section, according to the same source, includes dishes prepared to take away or consume in the space itself, in an area with seats designated for customers.
The company also highlights that the space has 300 parking spaces, including six charging points for electric vehicles. The store was built on a plot of around 5,000 square meters whose subdivision operation was developed by SGAL, responsible for the urban management of Alta de Lisboa.
Social action and community connection
According to the publication, as part of its social action plan, Mercadona will donate essential goods to the Musgueira Social Center, a practice that the company maintains in all its stores. The objective is to reinforce local support and ensure that part of the food surplus is sent to institutions that support the most vulnerable families.
In addition to the retail store, the building also includes a floor with new offices that should accommodate around 100 employees who work in the center of the country. The areas represented range from human resources and logistics to construction teams, which reinforces the brand’s operational presence in Lisbon.
Expansion continues in 2026
Mercadona also confirms that the first quarter of 2026 will bring a second store within the municipality, this time in Quinta do Lambert, also in Lumiar. With this opening, the company should reach 70 stores nationwide, consolidating an expansion that began in 2019 and which has accelerated especially in the central and southern regions.
According to the company, the location in Lisbon was an expected step, not only due to the population density but also due to the strong demand from consumers who already frequented stores in neighboring municipalities, such as Oeiras, Amadora or Loures. The entry into the capital thus symbolizes a new phase of the brand’s strategy in the country.
Lisbon gains another food retail space
The inauguration comes in a context of great competitiveness in the distribution sector, with several brands reinforcing their bets in the Lisbon region. Mercadona highlights that the opening of new stores follows consumer demand for large spaces, ready-to-eat meal areas and extended opening hours, trends that have marked the sector in recent years.
The arrival in Alta de Lisboa should attract residents of the area, but also workers from companies located on the Lumiar–Telheiras axis, as well as families who until now had supermarkets in other municipalities as their reference points. For , responsible for the urban development of the area, this opening represents another step forward in consolidating the commercial and service offering in the neighborhood.
