In a note, the entities say that the measure is not compatible with the exercise of press freedom
The Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (ABERT), the National Association of Magazine Editors (ANER) and the National Association of Newspapers (ANJ) condemned this Tuesday (9) the expulsion of journalists from the flat session in the Chamber of Deputies and the termination of the broadcast during the moment in which the federal deputy occupied the chair of President of the Chamber, and had to be removed by force.
“The impediment of journalists from working and the cutting of TV Câmara’s signal are incompatible with the exercise of press freedom”, says the note.
“ANJ, ABERT and ANER await the determination of responsibilities so that such intimidation practices are not repeated and that the principles of the Brazilian Constitution are preserved, which explicitly prohibits censorship”, he adds.
Journalists also reported attacks by legislative police officers. Videos show press professionals being pushed.
The episode generated tension in the plenary halls and paralyzed the vote, which resumed after the tensions were calmed. Both Braga and the president of the Chamber took a position on what happened. “I’ve been here for a while and until today I hadn’t heard about cutting the TV Câmara signal so that people wouldn’t follow what was happening in the plenary,” Gláuber said in an interview.
In a statement after the start of the session, Motta stated that he ordered the investigation of “any and all excesses committed against press coverage”. The President of the Chamber also justified the measure based on the Internal Regulations, which states that entry, movement and stay in buildings and places under the responsibility of the House will be subject to interruption or suspension for security reasons.
