IUC paid in April. No increase, “so that there is no fake news”

Tax stops being paid in the month in which the vehicle in question is registered. There is a single date for everyone, but it can be paid in installments.

O IUC – Single Road Tax is paid upon registration of the vehicle in question. But it will no longer be like that.

This Thursday, the Government approved the changes: payment will now be made in April, by all taxpayers. This is if the maximum tax amount is 100 euros.

If the IUC exceeds 100 euros and a maximum of 500 euros, it is paid in two installments: April and October.

If the “car tax” exceeds 500 euros, the taxpayer can pay in three installments, namely in April, July and October.

But this measure will not be implemented next year. António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency, announced this Thursday that the change will only come into effect on 2027. In 2026, the current rules will remain.

And, contrary to what Miranda Sarmento had said, the month to pay the IUC will not be February, but April.

The Government wants a transitional regime in 2027, in the case of people who would pay twice in a short period of time: in amounts up to 500 euros, payment can be made in October; if it is in two installments (more than 500 euros), it will be in July and October.

Leitão Amaro left another clarification, at the same press conference: “so that there is no fake news, changes in IUC do not imply any increase in tax. On the contrary, they simplify the way in which the Portuguese pay this tax”.
