Marcelo says he will not miss being President and "will no longer talk about politics"

Asked if there will be I miss the life of PresidentMarcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied: “None, none.” And he revealed that he already has plans for the future.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated this Wednesday that he will not miss being President of the Republic and promised that he will never talk about politics in this new phase, in which he plans to dedicate himself to activities in primary and secondary schools.

The head of state was speaking to journalists at the end of his visit to the Netherlands, after a reception he gave to kings Willem-Alexander and Máxima, and having made a farewell speech in which he said he was leaving with nostalgia.

Asked if there will be I miss the life of PresidentMarcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied:

“None, none. None, in this sense, my life has always been like this: I have one life while I have this life, once that phase ends, another completely different phase begins.”

The President of the Republic has already thought about what this “other phase” will be like, when his second term ends, on March 9, 2026: “First, don’t talk about politics anymoreit’s an important thing, it’s a choice that a former President has to make”.

“Some do it one way, others do it another. I intend to do it the way it is Don’t intervene, don’t speak, don’t speak upr”, he promised, adding that he will not make any type of political comment: “No televisions, no radios, no newspapers, nothing like that.”

“We have already had heads of state who have done this. Therefore, it is possible to do it”, he considered.

“What am I going to do? Yes, I will dedicate myself to schools, but primary and secondary“, said the retired law professor, stressing that he does not intend to return to university.

“I learned, for example, from the National Reading Plan, that there is a lot to do that I can be useful inin which there are cultural activities that I can develop, training, knowing the network of schools as I know it, and at the pace that my age will allow me when I no longer have that pace”, he continued.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assured that he also will not talk about politics in these activities with students, but “education”of what “school is for them”, of “what will change at school, the school and society”.

“There’s so much to talk about. If I think it’s over, it’s over. I can do another conference on cultural topics, yes, but not politics,” he added.

“And, of course, no political intervention, other than being invited as a former president on the 25th of April, the 10th of June, the 5th of October”, he highlighted.

Asked about presidential candidacies, the President of the Republic reiterated that he does not comment on anyeven less so to his “potential successor”, because it would be “a scandalous violation of neutrality”, just watches “in silence, completely”, this process.
