As Interior Minister in the ÖVP, Gerhard Karner is responsible for taking a tough line on asylum and migration issues. It hasn’t helped the ÖVP much politically so far: the polls are miserable and the FPÖ is on a continuous upward trajectory. Karner’s range of topics is wide, from migration to fighting crime to right-wing extremism. He is in a constant clinch with the FPÖ, although some positions are quite similar.
