The 1st level of the government repeats that Lula is fine, talking and dispatching, but they say they have not made contact or seen photos of the PT member
Ministers of the president’s government (PT) repeat that the president “he is well” and continues to be discharged even when admitted to the ICU (Intensive Treatment Unit). This is information made available to the public. They also say they have not spoken directly to or seen the president since his hospitalization.
The Chief Executive has been under medical care at Hospital Sírio Libanês, in São Paulo, since the early hours of Monday (Dec 10, 2024). He underwent emergency surgery to drain a hematoma.
This Thursday (Dec 12), in the morning, he underwent a new procedure to stop the flow in an artery that irrigates the membrane that covers the brain, the meninges.
Speaking to journalists after a plenary meeting of the CDESS (Council for Sustainable Social Economic Development), the Council, the minister of SRI (Secretariat for Institutional Relations), Alexandre Padilha, stated that he did not speak directly to Lula. I preferred to leave it “rest”.
“I, personally, have been talking to the medical team, I have been letting the president rest, I don’t want to cause any problems for him”said Padilha.
To the Poder360other ministers repeat that Lula “he is well”even comes to see him or even talk to him. They also haven’t seen images of Lula until now.
Geraldo Alckmin (Industry) spoke with Lula. According to the vice-president, he received a call from the Chief Executive on Wednesday night (Dec 11). Alckmin said that Lula was “super animated.”
The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, who made a video call with the president on Wednesday. He stated that he was “with the usual good humor” and should return to Brasília soon. The medical team states that the PT member’s discharge is scheduled for the week of December 16th. The date, however, is not confirmed and will depend on Lula’s health status.
CHRONOLOGY OF THE LULA OPERATION

- 9.dez.2024 – Lula feels uncomfortable and leaves a meeting on parliamentary amendments with the presidents of the Chamber, (PP-AL), and the Senate, (PSD-MG) held at Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília. The PT member informs his personal doctor, Roberto Kalil Filho, around 15h who has headaches;
- 9.dez.2024 – the president goes to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in the federal capital and undergoes 2 tests, a CT scan and an MRI. They decide to take the PT member to the São Paulo unit;
- 9.dez.2024 – the presidential plane with Lula on board takes off from Brasília at 23h08;
- 10.dez.2024 – lands in São Paulo at 0h24;
- 10.dez.2024 – Lula is undergoing surgery (understand how it went in the infographic below) which lasted around 3 hours;
- 10.dez.2024 – to the 4hthe president’s health status is announced;
- 10.dez.2024 – the president’s doctor informs that Lula is in the ICU (intensive treatment unit). President in the brain and his neurological functions are preserved;
- 11.dez.2024 – statement released to 12h that the president remains with a drain to prevent further bleeding in the head, but had a good immediate postoperative evolution;
- 11.dez.2024 – after saying that, the medical team informs the 16h30 that Lula on Thursday (Dec 12), at 7 am, to interrupt the flow in an artery that irrigates the membrane that covers the brain, the meninges;
- 12.dez.2024 – Lula undergoes the procedure at around 7am. The medical team reports that all neurological functions are preserved and the president should be discharged at the beginning of the week of December 16th.
Lula is under the care of the medical team led by Roberto Kalil Filho and Ana Helena Germoglio.
LULA’S HEALTH
Lula will be 81 when he ends his 3rd term as head of the Palácio do Planalto. He is already the oldest president of Brazil and frequently in interviews and public statements indicates that he intends to run in the next presidential election, in 2026.
The Chief Executive has “70 years old, energy of 30 and horny of 20”.
The craniotomy was carried out on Tuesday (Dec 10) after a cerebral hemorrhage was found due to what Lula suffered when he cut his toenail in the bathroom of the Palácio da Alvorada, his official residence in Brasília, in October this year.
Before that, in 2023, the president was hospitalized for the junction of the femur bone with the hip. On that occasion, he took the opportunity to have plastic surgery and removed excess skin around his eyes.
