Greece faced a large-scale outage of telecommunications systems on Sunday, paralyzing air traffic at all airports, including Athens and Thessaloniki, but the situation has now stabilized.
A breakdown of telecommunications systems in Greece on Sunday almost completely paralyzed air traffic. All airports in the country were affected, including the two largest international airports in Athens and Thessaloniki. They have since resumed operations on them. TASR writes about it according to ANMA and DPA agencies.
- The outage of telecommunications systems affected operations at airports in Greece.
- Athens and Thessaloniki airports were also affected.
- The reason was the failure of the central radio and communication systems.
According to the Greek Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), the problems were caused by an outage of the central radio and communication systems used by local airspace control centers. Air traffic controllers were apparently unable to communicate with each other.
HCAA said in the afternoon that it is gradually restoring the interrupted frequencies in coordination with external authorities and the European Organization for the Safety of Air Traffic (EUROCONTROL). “The technical issue, the full extent of which we are addressing for the first time, remains under investigation and further announcements will be made,” he said.
