Representatives of China and Russia at the United Nations called on the United States to immediately release Nicolás Maduro, president of Venezuela captured by the US last Saturday (3).
The appeal was made during the extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council, held this Monday (5), to address the US attack on the Latin American country.
Chinese Ambassador to the UN Fu Cong said China was deeply shocked by the military action and strongly condemned what he called “illegal and bullying acts” by the United States.

The diplomat also highlighted that the international community has expressed concern about sanctions, blockades and threats of use of force by the US against Venezuela.
“As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the United States has ignored the international community’s serious concerns regarding Venezuelan sovereignty, violating the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and the prohibition of the use of force in international relations,” declared Fu Cong.
Russia’s representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stated that the attack shocked everyone due to the lack of respect for international laws and the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other countries.

He stressed that Maduro is the legitimately elected president of Venezuela, although the last elections in the country were considered fraudulent by international observers.
“There is no justification for the crimes committed by the United States in Caracas. We firmly condemn the US aggression against Venezuela, in violation of all international norms. We call for the immediate release of Maduro and his wife. He is the legitimate elected president of Venezuela,” said the Russian diplomat.
Brazil also condemned action
Like China and Russia, Brazil also spoke at the Security Council and strongly condemned the American attacks on Venezuela.
The Brazilian representative stated that “the exploitation of natural resources does not justify the use of force or an illegal change of government”.
Brazil added that the attack “sets a dangerous precedent for the entire international community” and that “accepting this action would lead to a scenario of erosion of multilateralism”.
