The current Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, is expected to leave his position by next Friday (9), according to information from the television channel SBT News.
Unlike other departures that occur this year to contest elections or due to behind-the-scenes rearrangements in the government, the reason for the minister’s departure would be the wear and tear of his position.
The decision to leave the government would have come from Lewandowski himself, who appears exhausted after facing a series of internal strains and being involved in major political disputes.
Behind the scenes, another factor may have accelerated the decision: Lula’s announcement that he may recreate the Ministry of Public Security, an area that is currently under the responsibility of the Justice department.
Lula’s attempt to create a new ministry focused exclusively on public security is seen as a strategy to dispute the issue, which has been used by the right as a campaign motto for many elections and is considered a weakness of the current government.
Lewandowski has already taken a stance against the proposal, highlighting that the creation of a new department would not only weaken the Ministry of Justice, but would also fragment actions to combat organized crime, by restructuring, for example, the order of subordination of the Federal Police to the departments.
