One of the police officers accidentally stepped on the animal’s paw and, after the dog barked, the police officer fired a shot.
A mixed breed dog, popularly known as “Negão”, was shot by a military police officer on the night of Tuesday, 27th, in the Barrinha neighborhood, in Campo Bom (RS), in Vale dos Sinos, approximately 55 km from Porto Alegre. The episode was captured by security cameras. In a statement, the Public Security Secretariat of Rio Grande do Sul stated that it ordered the Internal Affairs Division of the Military Brigade to investigate the conduct of the police officers and the circumstances of the shooting of the dog in Campo Bom.
According to reports collected by councilor Kayanne Braga (PDT), who works in the cause of animal welfare, the confusion began around 8:30 pm, when the Military Brigade carried out an approach on three individuals, on a public road. One of the police officers had accidentally stepped on the animal’s paw and, after the dog barked, the police officer fired a shot.
According to the councilor, the dog is one of the survivors of the historic 2024 flood that devastated Rio Grande do Sul, and has lived under the collective care of the community since then. After being shot, “Negão” was taken to a veterinary clinic and received first aid. The shot, from non-lethal ammunition, hit the dog’s hind legs, which will have to be hospitalized, under care, for a few more days. Once the treatment is complete, “Negão” will be available for adoption.
