- The Ministry of Defense will submit an initiative to review the authorities’ decisions on donations to Ukraine.
- Politicians are also calling for an extraordinary meeting of the Fire Safety Committee of the Slovak Republic.
- Prosecutor Remeta was repeatedly associated with the opposition and his actions were criticized.
- OCTK stopped most of the criminal proceedings regarding military aid to Ukraine.
The Ministry of Defense (MoD) of the Slovak Republic will submit an initiative to review the decisions of law enforcement authorities (OČTK) in cases related to the donation of military equipment to Ukraine. State Secretary of the Department of Defense Igor Melicher informed about this at the press conference on Friday. Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, Deputy Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Tibor Gašpar and Deputy of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Richard Glück (all Smer-SD) also spoke at the press conference.
Glück, who is also the chairman of the parliamentary fire safety committee, announced that he will call an extraordinary meeting, to which the Bratislava regional prosecutor Rastislav Remeta will be invited. He repeatedly connected the prosecutor with the opposition. The Minister of Defense argued that other countries did not send their air defense systems or aircraft from active service either.
Gašpar added that the argument that Slovakia was not harmed is not valid. According to him, even if the fighters were non-functional, they would still have a monetary value and the state should try to get it from them by selling them. Politicians pointed out that in 2020 the regional prosecutor Remet was proposed for the position of general prosecutor by some members of the then government movement OĽaNO.
OCTK closed three out of four criminal prosecutions in connection with aid to Ukraine during the last election period. By stopping the criminal prosecution or rejecting the criminal complaint, the OCTK closed the cases of the donation of MiG-29 fighters, the S-300 anti-aircraft system, and the case of termination of the contract with the Russian company providing fighter service.
The police continue to investigate the handover of technical documentation to the military attaché of Ukraine. Bratislava regional prosecutor Rastislav Remeta informed about this at a press conference on Thursday (February 5).
