Images released after the attack show at least two drones hitting the vessel, and a fire started on board. The smoke generated was visible from several kilometers away, according to local witnesses.

Boykiy is part of project 20380 and is the third Steregushchy class corvette in service with the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet. Built at the Severnaya Verf shipyard in Saint Petersburg, it was launched in 2011 and entered service in 2013. The vessel is based in Baltiysk, in the Kaliningrad area, and its mission is to patrol coastal areas, escort naval groups, protect bases and face surface targets, submarines and aerial threats.

According to the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces, Boykiy participated in escorting Russia’s so-called parallel oil fleet. The vessel was also known for having collided with the research vessel Admiral Vladimirskiy during a docking maneuver in the military port of Kronstadt.
