Civil Defense of SP mobilizes crisis office after storms in the state

In São Carlos, in 24 hours, it rained the amount expected for 24 days; Forecast indicates continued risk of flooding and landslides between this Sunday (8) and Monday (9)

The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo contacted the crisis office in person this Sunday (8). The warning for intense rain remains valid until next Monday (9). Precipitation has intensified in the last 24 hours due to the action of a low pressure system in the ocean, associated with the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZCAS). The largest accumulations were recorded in the East, Coast and Northwest of the state.

From 2pm onwards, the energy, water supply, gas service, telephone concessionaires, the Department of Highways (DER), the State Social Fund, the Public Services Regulatory Agency of the State of São Paulo (ARSESP), SP Águas, the Fire Department and ARTESP will be with representatives at the Civil Defense headquarters, at Palácio dos Bandeirantes. The crisis office will also continue to be mobilized throughout Monday (9).

The city of São Carlos recorded the highest volume of rain in the last 24 hours, with 137 mm, followed by Ubatuba (129 mm), Bertioga (126 mm), São Sebastião (119 mm), São José do Rio Preto (105 mm), Caraguatatuba (103 mm), Elias Fausto (100 mm) and São Luís do Paraitinga (83 mm). The volumes are considered extremely high for a single day.

For comparison purposes, in São Carlos, the historical average of rain expected for the entire month of February is 169.9 mm. In just 24 hours, around 80% of the total forecast for the month rained, equivalent to approximately 24 days’ rain. In Ubatuba, the accumulated amount represented 72.5% of the monthly volume, while in São José do Rio Preto the total recorded corresponds to what was expected for around 15 days in February.

Balance of the main recorded occurrences

The intense rains recorded between Saturday (7) and Sunday (8) caused flooding, landslides and the collapse of barriers in different regions of the state. In total, 13 displaced people and 4 homeless people were registered. There were no records of victims or deaths.

  • Suzanápolis – Flooding points on roads, affecting homes and businesses. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • Nazaré Paulista – Points of flooding, landslides and wall falling onto the road. A house was flooded and four people were left homeless. No victims.
  • Guarujá – Landslide and preventive closure of a house, with one resident displaced.
  • Bragança Paulista – Flooding points on roads, reaching residential backyards. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • São Sebastião – Flooding and landslides. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • Francisco Morato – Landslide and wall collapse, with three people displaced. No victims.
  • Franco da Rocha – Flooding points. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • Ribeirão Bonito – Points of flooding and the collapse of two residential walls. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • São Carlos – Overflow of the Monjolinho River and flooding points, with seven vehicles stranded. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • São Luís do Paraitinga – Points of flooding and landslides. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • Ubatuba – Points of flooding and landslides. No victims, homeless or homeless.
  • Bertioga – Points of flooding and landslides, with one house closed and four people homeless. No victims.
  • Jundiaí – Landslide and wall collapse on residence, leaving five people homeless.

The State Civil Defense continues to continuously monitor weather conditions and maintains permanent contact with municipal civil defenses.
