“The Portuguese today demonstrated their appreciation for Democracy, reaffirming Portugal as a pillar of European humanism”.
The President of the European Council, António Costa, congratulated António José Seguro for the election as President of the Republic, considering that the Portuguese demonstrated “their appreciation for democracy, reaffirming Portugal as a pillar of European humanism”.
“I congratulate António José Seguro on his election as President of the Portuguese Republic and wish him every success in the exercise of his mandate. The Portuguese today demonstrated their appreciation for Democracy, reaffirming Portugal as a pillar of European humanism“, said António Costas in a message on his social media account.
António Costa succeeded António José Seguro as general secretary of the PS in 2014. On that occasion, Costa defeated Seguro in the PS primaries in 2014, with 67.7% against 31.5%, and would be the socialist candidate for prime minister.
Von der Leyen and Metsola
The presidents of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, also congratulated Seguro on his presidential victory.
“Congratulations, António José Seguro, on your election as President of the Republic. Portuguese citizens made their voice heard and, before the devastation caused by the storms, demonstrated remarkable democratic resilience”, writes Ursula von der Leyen on the social network X.
The president of the European Commission also states that “Portugal’s voice in defense” of “common European values remains strong”.
Also on social network X, the President of the European Parliament sent congratulations to António José Seguro, highlighting: “I know that Europe can count on your experience and commitment in our common project, especially as a former MEP, as much as Portugal can continue to count on Europe”.
