Lyra tells Lula to give support, but wants neutrality in PE – 02/09/2026 – Panel

The governor of Pernambuco, (PSD), reaffirmed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in a meeting last week at Palácio do Planalto, that she will support his reelection, if he remains neutral in the state dispute.

Lula is being pressured by the PSB to work only for the candidacy of the mayor of Recife, who presides over the party and must run against Lyra.

He should meet this Tuesday (10) with the president in Brasília to reinforce the message and discuss other topics in the relationship between the parties,

Although she belongs to the PSD, which is trying out its own candidacy, the governor had the approval of her party’s president, Gilberto Kassab, to stand on Lula’s platform, if she preferred.

To do this, however, she wants the president not to support any candidate for the Pernambuco government, or to state that he will have two platforms in the state, his and Campos’. Another important request is that the PT member not hold campaign events in the first round in the state, which is considered unlikely by Lula’s allies.

Lyra’s allies were excited about the fact that the mayor’s advantage over the governor fell from 22% to 12% in the first round.

The bet from those around her is that, due to the numbers, the mayor may back down from the decision to confront her. He would have to resign by the beginning of April, while the governor can run for re-election while still in office.
