Leonardo, the hero of the book “The adventure of the Leonardo lynx”, returned on February 5th to the Alcoutim School Group, where the work was created three years ago as part of a school project, in an environmental awareness campaign aimed at primary school students.
The initiative involved 58 students, to whom the book was presented, highlighting that “the Iberian lynx population is growing in the Iberian Peninsula”, where, at the end of 2024, 2401 lynxes were identified, of which 354 in Portugal. At the end of the session, all students received a copy of the work, with the aim of promoting knowledge about the Iberian lynx, an emblematic species of the region.

The following day, the presentation took place with around 300 students from the 1st cycle of the Castro Marim School Group, in sessions held at the Castro Marim Library and at the Altura School Center. The initiative also included the presence of ‘friend’ Urânia, a puppet who enchanted the participants.
The awareness-raising action was promoted by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), with the collaboration of Picada Cultural and SA Marionetas, responsible for the design, production and realization of the Urânia puppet show.
In total, the initiative involved 358 children and their teachers, being financed by the LIFE Lynxconnect project, a cross-border project that brings together Portuguese and Spanish partners and whose main objective is to continue the recovery process of the Iberian lynx, a species that “was already extinct in Portugal” and highly threatened in Spain.
The book “The adventure of the Leonardo lynx” includes illustrations made by students from Escola Básica Professor Joaquim Moreira, in Martim Longo, Alcoutim, and is the result of the environmental education project about the Iberian lynx “Os Guardianios do Lince”.
The work is freely distributed and can be downloaded via .
