Kaya Kalas: Europe will also set conditions to Russia for peace in Ukraine

A list of proposals on the concessions that should be demanded from Russia in the context of an agreement on peace and its end, the head of European diplomacy is preparing to present in the coming days, as as she emphasized, her countries should first agree on what they expect from Russia before talking to its president.

Movement to resume contacts with Putin

In addition, as she emphasized in an interview with international media: “Let’s discuss what we want to discuss with the Russians before we decide who will be the person who will talk to them.”

Some European Union leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, are seeking to resume contacts with Vladimir Putin.

Kalas: “We also have terms and demands”

Kaya Kalas stated that she intends to send in the coming days to the 27 EU member states a list of “ideas” regarding the demands that should be formulated by the EU as a preamble to Moscow. “If they make maximalist demands, we also have to make maximalist demands. We also have conditions and we must impose these conditions, not on the Ukrainians, who are already under a lot of pressure, but on the Russians,” he said.

In the view of the former prime minister of Estonia, Europe should pressure the Kremlin to make concessions, including the reduction of Russia’s military forces.

As he said: “For there to be sustainable peace, all sides at the table, including the Russians and the Americans, need to understand that the Europeans have to agree.” As he argued: “If we don’t defend anything, there is no reason to sit at the table. It is important to discuss what concessions we need to see from the Russian side in order to have a sustainable peace.”

The head of European diplomacy stressed that Russia is “not winning” the war in Ukraine and that its losses are “increasing significantly”.
