The trend of “administrative nights”: procrastinating friends get together to do paperwork

The trend aims to encourage people to stop putting off boring administrative tasks and simultaneously promote social interaction between friends.

A new social trend is turning dreaded to-do lists into an opportunity to get together with friends.

Nicknamed “administrative nights“, these informal meetings invite friends to deal with life’s administrative tasks together, such as paying bills, responding to emails, filling out documents or taking care of taxes.

“Life management” refers to the small but important responsibilities that silently accumulate over time. Although rarely difficult, tasks like canceling subscriptions, scheduling appointments or creating a budget are easy to put off.

Administrative nights aim to change this by creating a specific time and a social environment to put an end to procrastination and finally clear these tasks from your to-do list.

There are few formal rules. Participants generally avoid doing their regular work tasks or answering phone calls, focusing on personal tasks.

One social media user described organizing an end-of-year session with friends to get rid of loose ends before 2026. The group created a collaborative playlist and brought snacks for a relaxed atmosphere.

“We’re all really excited because none of us want to do any of these tasks, but it’s exciting to get together and do this with our friends,” she says.

Other people took the concept outside the home. Benjamin Chipman, who shared his experience in a viral video, said he and a friend went to a bar with Wi-Fi and power outlets, using happy hour as motivation to finally complete postponed projects. “The night of administrative work it really changed my life“, these.

Mental health professionals say the concept has merit. Zvi Bellin, a licensed professional counselor and professor of clinical psychology at National University in California, explained that starting a task is often the hardest part.

“Start a task requires mental energybut once someone starts, the pace picks up,” he told Working together with others builds mutual accountability and focus.

The practice is similar to a productivity strategy known as “double body“, often used by people with hyperactivity and other neurodivergent individuals, in which the simple presence of other people increases concentration and the ability to complete tasks.

Companies are also joining the movement. The Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport is now hosting management nights at its restaurant, Kestra, with right to themed cocktails like the Inbox Zero Martini.

As adults have to juggle work, digital demands and social needs, nights devoted to admin reflect a broader cultural shift, with productivity and social life no longer competing.
