Dream Cake is one of the most popular sweets in Denmark. You will fall in love with its taste

Origin recipe for Danish Dream Cake dates back to the 1960s. It was then that a young girl, Jytte Andersen, took part in a baking competition organized by one of the Danish food companies. The participant took the recipe from her grandmother. Dream cake it outclassed the competition, and over time it gained wide popularity throughout Denmark. Interestingly, initially the baked goods had a name “Östergaardskagen”from the name of the farm where Jytte’s grandmother lived.

Over the years dream cake has become an extremely appreciated Danish specialty. You can buy ready-made mixtures of this baking in stores, but many people choose preparing it yourself. The classic version is characterized by a fluffy and delicate dough and the presence of aromatic and slightly moist coconut mass. It is thanks to it that the baked goods taste unique (according to some – like a dream).

There are plenty recipe variants – some people add to it chocolate, nuts or almonds. However, this does not change the fact that dream cake has become a permanent fixture in Danes’ homes and has been served during family celebrations and meetings with friends for years.

Ingredients for the cake:

  • 4 eggs;
  • 240 g of wheat flour;
  • 70 g of butter;
  • 200 g of sugar;
  • 200 ml of milk;
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder;
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla sugar.

Ingredients for coconut mass:

  • 100 g of butter;
  • 150 g of brown sugar;
  • 50 g of regular sugar;
  • 60 ml of milk;
  • 150 g coconut flakes.

Preparation method:

  1. First, use a mixer to beat the eggs and sugar. The result should be a smooth, fluffy, white mass.
  2. Melt 70 g of butter in a pot and mix it with the milk. The whole thing should cool down slightly.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix flour, sugar, vanilla sugar and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the beaten egg mass and mix thoroughly.
  4. Fill the mixture with melted butter and milk. Mix until everything becomes smooth.
  5. Pour the dough into a 20 x 30 cm baking tin. Bake the cake at a temperature of about 180 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes. Check the degree of baking from time to time – it will be ready when it turns golden brown.
  6. In the meantime, prepare the cream and coconut mass. Melt the butter in a pot, add milk, sugar and coconut flakes. Mix everything.
  7. When the dough is ready, take it out and spread the coconut mixture over it. Increase the oven temperature to 225 degrees Celsius, place the mold inside and bake for about 5 minutes (the coconut mass should start to bubble characteristically).
  8. Set the finished cake aside to cool and then divide it into square pieces.
