Governor of Bahia goes to India to make medicines cheaper – 02/18/2026 – Panel

A member of the president’s delegation () to , the governor of Bahia, (PT), will visit the facilities of Indian companies and sign terms of commitment to close a partnership that allows the state government to produce at least four offered today in the SUS.

The objective is to lower the price of medicines, which currently cost R$1.7 billion per year. Among them is Pertuzumab, used to treat breast cancer. But the most expensive medicine for the SUS is Eculizumab, used to treat rare diseases and which has a demand of R$817 million.

The state government will also be able to produce — such as lung, kidney and stomach — and Bevacizumab, also used in oncology treatment.

With local production, the goal is to reduce the cost of these medicines to the SUS by up to 25%, in some cases. A box that costs R$20,000 can cost up to R$6,000, according to Bahiafarma’s CEO, Ceuci Nunes. “A saving of R$600 million per year”, he guaranteed.

The terms of commitment will be signed on February 21st and 23rd, respectively. International companies are responsible for medicine technology and patents.

The measure only became possible because, in 2024, Bahiafarma selected the national company Bionovis as a private partner in technology transfer. From there, international agreements will be signed with Samsung Bioepis (South Korea), Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Biocon Biologics (India).
