The European Commission (EC) wants to assure the citizens of Slovakia and Hungary that it is striving to ensure energy security in both countries. On Saturday, EC spokeswoman Paula Pinhová stated this in a post on the X social network and emphasized that reducing dependence on Russian fossil fuels is key to the resilience of the European Union.
“Energy security is at the heart of the Commission’s concerns. We have colleagues working day and night to ensure energy security in all 27 Member States, together with experts in individual member countries,” added Pinhová.
According to her, Russia was abusing the EU’s dependence on the import of fossil fuels even before the start of the war in Ukraine. She reminded that Moscow has also begun attacking key energy infrastructure. “That’s how we got to the events of the past days concerning of the Družba pipeline, which is unable to supply oil, especially to those who are still dependent on these supplies – Hungary and Slovakia,” she stated.
She emphasized that the EC is in close and constant contact with the Hungarian and Slovak authorities. “To make sure we can address all concerns arising from an attack on this infrastructure,” Pinhová emphasized.
According to her, the Ukrainian government is determined to repair the pipeline. “Now we know again how the story unfolds – Ukrainians repair infrastructure that is destroyed daily, and then it is destroyed again. And that’s why we have to remind ourselves again that the more independent we are from Russian fossil fuels, the better off we will be and the less we will be in this situation.” the spokeswoman declared. She repeated that the Commission cooperates daily with people responsible for energy and energy security in Slovakia and Hungary.
