Hungarian Chancellor conditions support for the new measures on the restoration of oil supply via the Druzhba pipeline, damaged in Ukrainian territory after Russian attacks
The Hungarian Foreign Minister announced, this Sunday (22), that will block the planned adoption of the 20th European Union sanctions package against Russia, due to the interruption of Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline.
The 27 Member States still need to approve these new sanctions for them to come into force.
“Tomorrow [segunda-feira]the Council of Foreign Ministers is expected to adopt the 20th sanctions package. We will block this decision“, declared Péter Szijjártó on Facebook.
“As long as the Ukrainians do not allow the supply of oil to Hungary, we will not authorize any important decisions for them,” he added.
According to Ukraine, the Druzhba pipeline — which runs through its territory to transport Russian oil to Slovakia and Hungary — was damaged on January 27 by Russian strikes in Brody.
Hungary considers that it is the responsibility of Ukraine guarantees the safety and operation of the section of the oil pipeline that crosses its territory.
In early February, the European Union proposed new sanctions against Russia, targeting the banking and energy sectors. This would be the twentieth package of sanctions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
New export and import bans against Russia are also being considered.
