Blizzard threat makes northeastern US states declare emergency

As a developing, high-impact bomb cyclone approaches the Northeast United States, several states in the region are preparing for blizzard conditions that could begin as early as Sunday night (22).

Big cities like New York and Boston could see more snow than they have seen in several years. As a result, some states have issued emergency orders in addition to travel bans. See below:

  • State of emergency: Governors of several states, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, declared states of emergency before the storm. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a state of emergency in 22 of the state’s 62 counties on Sunday morning.
  • Travel Bans: In Rhode Island, Gov. Dan McKee enacted a statewide travel ban starting Sunday night, while a parking ban is in effect in the city of Providence. In New York, Westchester County will also institute a “total road closure” overnight, officials announced on Platform X.
  • “Shutdown” in New York: In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a state of emergency and said a citywide travel ban will take effect Sunday night and remain in place until noon on Monday. The city also canceled classes on Monday.
  • Preparations in Boston: Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has declared a snow emergency and is implementing a parking ban. “From this point forward, all vehicles parked in designated snow emergency lanes will be towed,” he said.
