Lula announces decree to recognize state of calamity in Juiz de Fora

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced, this Tuesday (24), a decree to recognize state of calamity em Juiz de Forain Minas Gerais. The heavy rains that hit the city left at least 16 people dead. The measure must be published in an extra edition of the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union).

“In the coming hours — and days — we will remain ready to act with the speed and strength that the moment requires. Our focus is to guarantee humanitarian assistance, the reestablishment of basic services, aid to homeless people and support for reconstruction,” Lula wrote in a publication on X.

The president also declared that he had determined to send a coordination team from the National Force of the SUS (Unified Health System) to Zona da Mata — a region located in the southeast of the state of Minas Gerais.

Lula, who is on a return trip to Brazil, reported having spoken to the mayor of Juiz de Fora, Margarida Salomão (PT), offering solidarity and offering support from the federal government.

“I want to send my deepest condolences to the families who lost their homes and, what’s worse, their loved ones. And I sympathize with the authorities and security forces in Minas Gerais who are working to rescue and provide immediate assistance to the population affected by the rain”, concluded the head of Planalto.
