A majority of Americans show growing concern about the mental acuity of President Donald Trump, and consider that the 79-year-old leader has become “erratic” with age.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Tuesday – the day Trump delivered his State of the Union address – indicates that 61% of adults in the United States describe Trump as “erratic” as you age.
This is an opinion shared not only by the vast majority of Democrats, 89%, but also by a third of Republicans and the majority of independents (64%).
However, 81% of Republicans believe that Trump continues to show “mental acuity” and that he is capable of handling the challenges of the presidency, while only 19% of Democrats and 36% of independents think so. Overall, only 45% of respondents say that the agent enjoys these capabilities, a down from 54% who thought so in September 2023.
The survey was carried out on a sample of 4,638 adults and had a margin of error of two percentage points. Other studies reinforce this notion that The United States president’s cognitive and physical abilities appear to be deteriorating.
A CNN poll last month showed that the proportion of Americans who believe that Trump has the stamina and acumen necessary to hold office fell to 46%, compared to 53% at the end of 2023.
Another Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll last week placed those who believe that the president lacks the mental acuity required for the position at 56% and those who doubt his physical condition at 51%.
The numbers come in a context of growing debate about the age of the political class in Washington.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey reveals that 79% of Americans believe that elected positions in the capital are too elderly to adequately represent the population.
Trump physicist questioned
On the other hand, Trump’s physical condition has been questioned due, for example, to bruises that appeared on your handswhich he usually puts on makeup to disguise, or because he has been seen coach at some public events.
