With the return of rain, the floor becomes more slippery and requires extra care. Many drivers reduce speed, but continue to fail in one essential point: the correct use of lighting. According to the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP), this distraction can translate into high fines.
It is not uncommon to see vehicles driving with only daytime running lights or parking lights when it rains. However, the Brazilian Traffic Code determines that, whenever visibility is affected by heavy rain, fog or snow, the dipped headlights must be turned on, in accordance with article 61, articulated with article 19.
Driving only with minimums constitutes an infraction. The fine can be between 60 and 300 euros, depending on the circumstances.
Rear fog light only in extreme cases
The rear fog lamp should only be used when visibility is very low. Outside of these conditions, it causes glare and constitutes a very serious infraction, covered by articles 145 and 146 of the Traffic Code, with fines that can reach 600 euros.
A rule of thumb helps to avoid mistakes: if the windshield wipers are on, the dipped beam should also be on.
Aquaplaning: momentary loss of control
Rain increases the risk of aquaplaning, a situation in which the tires no longer have contact with the asphalt and the vehicle slides over the water. At these moments, the steering stops responding.
The condition of the tires is crucial. Portuguese legislation requires a minimum depth of 1.6 mm, but replacement is recommended from 3 mm onwards, especially for those who frequently drive on wet roads.
If aquaplaning occurs, the recommendation is to ease off the accelerator, keep the steering wheel steady and avoid braking or sudden movements until you regain grip.
More distance and less speed
On wet roads, braking distance increases. The recommended practice is to reduce approximately 20% of your usual speed and double the distance to the vehicle in front. If two seconds are enough in the dry, in the rain it should be four.
Avoiding aggressive maneuvers, sudden braking and risky overtaking is essential. According to , seeing and being seen continues to be the main measure to reduce accidents and also to avoid fines. A simple gesture can make the difference between a safe trip and an expensive misdemeanor.
