An avalanche threat hangs over the Tatras: Thin layers of snow and temperatures above zero increase the risk

  • In the High and Western Tatras, there is still a slight avalanche danger of the second degree.
  • In the Fatras and the eastern part of the Low Tatras, there is a moderate avalanche danger in the afternoon.
  • The main problem is wet snow in positions up to 1800 meters.
  • On the northern sides of the higher elevations, a permanently weak layer of unstable snow persists.

In the High, Western and western parts of the Low Tatras on Wednesday, a moderate avalanche danger continues to apply, level two on the five-point international scale. In the Fatras and the eastern part of the Low Tatras, there is also a slight avalanche danger above the forest zone in the afternoon. This was reported by the Avalanche Prevention Center (SLP) of the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS).

The main avalanche problem is wet snow up to 1800 meters above sea level (m above sea level). “On the northern side of the highest elevations, there is still a persistently weak layer in the snow profile. The current situation in the terrain requires good decisions, avoid steep places, watch out for a larger layer of melted snow, but also avoid places where blown snow from the last snowfall is evident and did not fall with an avalanche in the previous days.” the center warned.

Temperatures will reach positive numbers in locations below 1800 m above sea level. On the northern side of the mountains, in the case of shaded places, the snow still retains its powdery character. “In the highest places on the northern side of the mountains, there is a permanently weak layer of square-grained snow,” SLP added that the height of the snow cover is still significantly below average, especially in locations up to 1500 m above sea level
