A honeymoon can be an unforgettable moment in a couple’s life, especially when it is prepared with dedication and high expectations. The chosen destination, often based on attractive images and promises of comfort, strongly influences the experience. However, there are cases in which the reality in the tourist location does not match what is advertised, generating frustration. That’s exactly what happened during a British couple’s honeymoon on a paradise island.
The destination selected by a British couple for their honeymoon was a five-star hotel on the Greek island of Rhodes. The expectation was to enjoy rest and tranquility on an island considered paradisiacal.
Arrival at the resort confirmed, at first glance, a pleasant location. “When we arrived, everything looked beautiful, on the seafront, a big place,” revealed the couple, quoted by the Daily Mail newspaper. However, on the first day, the situation proved to be different from what was expected.
The promised leisure environment ended up being transformed into an active construction zone. “After breakfast, I heard a constant noise. We went to see and they were renovating, right in the pool, which was called relaxation”, said the tourists, showing their discontent.
Presence of noise and machinery
The rest area was occupied by trucks and machines working among sun loungers. As the couple reported, cited by the same source, “trucks with cement were passing by and it was necessary to move the sun loungers to make way”.
Tourists also said that “there were people in the pool while they were installing the glass panels on the balconies above.” This scenario generated discomfort and some concern about the safety of those present.
The intensity of the noise led to attempts to seek refuge in other spaces. “I said we would go to the bar and forget about relaxing, there was music, we wanted to relax, but not even the music was heard”, lamented the couple.
Failed attempt at support by the agency
The discomfort led to seeking help from the agency representative on site. However, this attempt was not followed up. “I went to speak to the representative, but they told me they didn’t know when I would be back. I gave my number, but I never got a response”, said the husband, quoted by the previously mentioned source.
The lack of follow-up contributed to the feeling of abandonment. The situation remained unchanged throughout the stay, with no attempt at resolution by the resort.
“It was all day, every day, it was unbelievable. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was an authentic construction site”, described the couple, highlighting the atmosphere they experienced during their honeymoon on the paradisiacal island.
Conditions did not match
This negative experience began as soon as I entered the reserved room. A swim-out typology with direct access to the pool was chosen. When opening the curtains, the disappointment was immediate. “The sun loungers were really dirty and brown. We didn’t use them,” lamented the couple.
The Brit explained the situation: “I understand people use tanners, but this was streaky. I really needed a cleanse.” The use of the external area ended up being discarded due to the state it was in.
A room change was requested, but the response received was negative. The lack of alternatives increased tourist discontent, according to the same source.
Lack of entertainment
The expectation included some type of evening entertainment. However, this part of the experiment also failed. “We went to see if there was entertainment at night, maybe karaoke, but nothing was happening, honestly,” said the travelers.
The general atmosphere was described as “ridiculous, crazy”. The conditions even prevented the collection of photographs of the honeymoon. “We didn’t even take a photo. Everything was so dirty,” added the husband, quoted by .
Agency reaction and compensation proposal
A complaint was filed with the agency upon return. The cost of the trip was around 1,080 pounds, around 1248 euros. The agency responded with a refund proposal of £281, approximately 324 euros.
The amount was considered insufficient by the couple. Later, a new proposal of around 446 euros was presented, which was eventually accepted.
Interestingly, the island of Rhodes is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Greece and receives millions of tourists every year, attracted mainly by the beaches and the historic center classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
