Chamber transforms Salvador into capital on July 2 – 03/10/2026 – Brasília Hoje

This Tuesday (10) approved the symbolic transfer of the capital from Brasília to July 2nd, the date that celebrates the anniversary of Bahia’s independence. The text emphasizes that the change will not affect work in the Federal District and that the Union will coordinate with the Bahian authorities the logistics for carrying out official acts on the date. The project goes to the Federal.

For deputy Gabriel Nunes (PSD-BA), who was the project’s rapporteur, the change represents an “act of historic justice” with the Bahian mobilization for independence. “The celebration of the 2nd of July does not only concern regional memory, but the very affirmation of Brazil’s unity and sovereignty”, argues in the report.

The rapporteur emphasizes that the actions of the Bahians were part of Brazil’s independence process and organized the resistance, “hosting the provisional government, providing food, personnel and essential material resources, and ensuring the political and military support that Rio de Janeiro, alone, was unable to achieve after 1822”.

Representative Kim Kataguiri (Missão-SP) argued against the proposal, which he believes should not be a priority for the Legislature.

The text was approved symbolically, when there was agreement between the deputies.
