“Due to the heavy rains especially in the Degama area, the administration of the zone has expressed grief over the death of 30 people,” wrote the communications department of the Gamo region in a statement on the Facebook social network on Tuesday evening. The Gamo Zone is an administrative unit in the southern part of Ethiopia, named after the ethnic group of the same name that lives in the area, and has its own language.

There has been severe flooding across East Africa in recent days. Dozens of people were killed in neighboring Kenya after torrential rains hit the capital Nairobi and other areas on Friday. Scientists have long warned that human-caused climate change is increasing the likelihood, length and severity of extreme weather events such as torrential rains.
