Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said in his first statement after being appointed to the post that he believes in “friendship” with neighboring countries, emphasizing that his military is only targeting American bases in those nations.
Although Khamenei says only American bases are being targeted, there have been several attacks on civilian and oil-related targets in the region.
At another point in the speech, Khamenei warned that all American bases in the region must be closed or “they will be attacked.”

The United States and Israel are at war with Iran. The conflict began on February 28, when a coordinated attack between the two countries in Tehran.
